"MORNING, OLIVIA. OR should I say afternoon? It's not like you to be late."

Janice, her supervisor, was chewing on the end of a pen and frowning at Liv over a document as she slid into her seat at the workstation opposite. The new, open-plan layout was supposed to be advantageous for social interaction with work colleagues, but right this minute it would have been much less embarrassing to have the old arrangement where Janice was enclosed in her own office with a solid wall between them.

Could anyone tell she'd had sex? It had been so long since she'd been with a man that she couldn't remember if there'd be signs. And with a man like Phthonos, who'd left her feeling so replete she could barely walk, who knew what might be revealed if anyone looked too closely. Finger marks and bruises, probably. Flogging and bite marks, definitely. Thank God they were all in private places currently hidden beneath her clothing.

She scanned the room. There were six staff other than Janice and herself currently working away at their computers, and no one seemed particularly interested in their quiet little administrator who didn't have a life outside work, and therefore could not possibly have an interesting reason to be late. She bit her lip to curb the urge for evil laughter.

"Sorry, Jan. I did leave a message earlier at the front desk. I...um..." Had a stomach bug? Slept in? Had one of my panic attacks? She couldn't bring herself to straight out lie, but what on earth could she say? "I was indisposed." There. That sounded okay, surely. The surge of heat in her cheeks gave lie to the words and she instinctively ducked her head, only to remember too late about her recent haircut. She could no longer use her hair as a screen behind which to hide.

Her boss was already turning dismissively back to her work, but then her eyes narrowed and she did a double-take. "Indisposed?" She let out a small chuckle. "If I didn't know you better, Liv, I'd say you've been playing hooky with some guy."

God damn it. More heat? Get yourself under control. You'll be breaking out in a full-blown sweat in a minute.

Jan's eyes widened suddenly and her mouth dropped open a little. "No. Way. A guy? You? No!"

Liv scowled, unaccountably hurt. "Why is it so hard to believe that I might be able to attract a man? Everyone else seems to be doing it. Why not me?" Then, as Janice continued to stare at her wide-eyed, she sighed and her shoulders slumped a little "Okay, maybe it is out of character. I guess. But—" How to explain Phthonos? What if he wasn't even real, and she'd just had the best morning of her life with a figment of her own imagination? Would that count as fucking yourself? If you were convinced your imaginary lover was real, was it still called masturbation? Or madness? Wouldn't that put the icing on the cake of Janice's shock?
